What seems to have come to the rescue of the city government is the new technology of using pre-cast segment for elevated roads. Despite all these, we are sure of completing all the ongoing work ahead of Games,'' Chauhan claimed.
Several agencies are involved in these projects. "Approvals and identifying and shifting of services have caused substantial delay. In case of the Ring Road bypass project, the PWD got the plan approved by the LG after it failed to get a go-ahead from Delhi Urban Art Council. The elevated road project saw several changes in its design before it finally came through. PWD engineers allege that the delay has been due to bureaucratic red tape in approving the designs. But slowest among all is the UP Link Road connecting Akshardham to Noida, with only 9% progress. Ring Road bypass from Salimgarh Fort to Veldrome Road has made only 15% progress. Sources said only 40% work has been done on the elevated road on Barapulla Nullah, which is being built exclusively to provide seamless traffic movement between the Games Village and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Even as Chauhan exuded confidence about most of the projects, he said "Barapulla Nullah and Ring Road bypass remain areas of concern''. The PWD told the panel that barring BJ Marg/ RTR Marg flyover, all others would be completed in August and September, a delay of only 2-3 months. The five projects that have missed deadlines underpass at ITO Chungi and grade separator at Raja Ram Kohli Marg and three flyovers between IIT and Vasant Vihar on Outer Ring Road were taken up in the recently held empowered committee meeting on Games-related projects. Funding won't be a problem,'' he claimed. As and when ongoing projects are completed, the focus will shift to yet-to-be finished works. "A delay of two months should not be seen as a major issue. But PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan is confident of finishing all projects before the Games. And two crucial road projects directly related to the Games venues Barapulla Nullah and Ring Road bypass may be completed only by June and July 2010 respectively, tantalisingly close to the October extravaganza. Of the 19 projects undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) for upgrading the road infrastructure ahead of the 2010 sporting mega-event, five projects, including flyovers, underpass and grade separators, have already missed their June 2009 deadline, and three more may follow suit. But there's good news as things are finally moving at a brisk pace.
